Boroondara Arts

Each year the city of Borrondara runs an extensive arts program through its venues Hawthorn Arts Centre, Kew Court House and the Town Hall Gallery. In previous years each venue has produced its own publication biannually. The challenge for this brief was to produce a publication that brought all the programs into one annual publication under the banner of Boroondara Arts. Whilst exploring themes for the program we discovered the name ‘Boroondara’ is a word in the Woiwurrung language meaning ‘where the ground is thickly shaded’. This translation inspired visual metaphors which could represent the arts program identity for Boroondara. After a number of iterations and with input from all the various stakeholders involved we edited these until the final cover image shown here was selected to represent the year’s program.

Inside the publication we implemented a cleaner design and larger format than previous programs. We developed a navigational system with the typography to help readers quickly identify which venue was featured on each page.
