Lalou Bistrot à Vin

Lalou is a French style bistrot on Little Malop Street in Geelong. We first worked with the client on identity design of Geelong Cellar Door, the bar next door, so it was good to be asked back.

The bistrot sits in a 1928 shop front at 93 Little Malop Street, originally designed by Geelong architects Buchan Laird & Buchan and restored by Bloom Interior Design. The building’s Art Deco details inspired the brand. We drew the building as a small seal, used as an illustration rather than a logo, to mark authenticity across the identity.

The wordmark is set in New Spirit, a revival of the 1905 typeface Windsor that blends Art Deco and Art Nouveau. A monogram in the script typeface Altesse, along with a fleuron, adds a classical touch. The colour palette follows the interior: rustic, cosy and quietly Parisian.

We applied the identity to signage, menus, the website, bistrot cards, coasters and social media. The social launch used a looping bistrot scene from the French New Wave film Masculin Féminin.
